The ends of an era

On January 1 ends another chapter of brazilian history. The eight-year administration of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva ended with records in many sectors such as economic and social indicators, for example. The economy moves slowly, but steadily,  the poor consume more, and taxes revenue hits record. The perfect scenario for any president to be proud of a well done job.

Lula's government ends with a popularity of 87% and with positive results, which suggests that he will be forever remembered as the best president of Brazil. Correct? No. Over the years, and with decreasing heat of emotions, Lula will be seen as it really is: a charismatic leader who becamed president of the country and found a new project in Brazil going on, and had the major responsibility to continue the measures initiated before 2003.
Except for the PAC, Growth Acceleration Program, which is a list of public works, not a statement of project investments, most policies developed in the Worker's   Party government, had already been created, or at least, designed by former governments. It is no exaggeration to say that the work of President Lula came down to accomplish the work of others, and not to restructure a nation.
Still, Lula is assigned to a claim that does not belong to him. Lula is seen as a savior of Brazil, as a hero, just and author of the largest ever seen socializing process in the country. In reality, the brazilian is deceived by an (almost) false sense of well being and the traditional latin immediacy give Lula the credits for the work of others.

In fact, Lula was responsible for the continuation of the policies needed for the future consolidation of Brazil as a capitalist power in the global scene. However, creation and continuation of these policies are different responsibilities and require separate claims to several presidents. The Real Plan was, and remains, the big boom stabilizing the national economy. For it to be created and implemented, it took three presidents. If a title of best president ever exists, it should be split between Itamar Franco, initially, Fernando Henrique Cardoso and, to a lesser extent, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Brazil has improved, thanks to this three presidents, but who switches from Dawn's Palace tomorrow is Lula, and leaves a stronger Brazil, but also challenges to the next president, Dilma Rousseff. A growing public debt, threats of a financial war at the beginning of government, spending cuts of the PAC, and the government mistakes that apparently remain, like the pathetic foreign policy, which needs to be urgently reviewed, a bloated administrative machinery and political patronage , which will be exacerbated with the PMDB in the vice presidency.

By passing the Presidential Rage to Rousseff, Lula becomes an ex. These two powerful letters state that the president no longer occupies the office. Lula must remember this, and summarize his role in political leadership and management consulting in all spheres, as do the american presidents. Ends Era Lula begins another page of a book called Brazil. The purpose of history is not to disqualify the entire work of Lula, but to question his greatness.
